In 1969, The Norton Commando SS was praised for its performance when compared to the new Honda CB 750. Norton, encouraged by the potential of their big engine, hired former Suzuki racer Frank Perris to manage a factory race team. The sponsor affiliated with the race team was John Player, An English cigarette manufacturer. During this period Norton's three main riders Peter Williams, Dave Croxford and Mick Grant, all did well in the Formula 750 races. This encouraged Norton to create a road bike that looked like the factory 750 racers.
Mick Olfield, An art school graduate was hired to design the John Player Norton. The majority of the bike focused on the commando design concepts, with slight modifications. Mick was half way through the project when the race team started entering endurance events. A unique fairing and twin headlights were included for the night races. The twin headlight look was incorporated in the bike design, along with further changes, which included a 3.5 gas tank (welded extension from the original 2.6 gallon tank), a black chrome exhaust and a storage compartment behind the single seat.
This particular model, 1 of 200 that were made, was obtained from Australia. After undergoing extensive servicing and refurbishment, the motorcycle has been returned to its original glory. There are currently only 2,200 miles on the speedometer, which is believed to be correct. The engine is an 828cc and not the 750cc short stroke. All restoration work has been carried out by renowned marque specialised Norman White, formerly experimental engineer and test rider on the Commando development project and presently dedicated to all aspects of NORTON COMMANDO engineering and fabrication. A personal letter from Norman White, describing all aspects of the restoration work and current condition is included with the service documentation. All service work invoices are also on file.
