We are pleased to offer for sale this fantastic 1972 Jaguar E-Type Series 3 V12 Roadster.
This car was delivered new in 1972 in London to a New Zealand ex-pat working for Amex, on his return to New Zealand in 1975 / 76 he took the car with him and it has remained there until now. Used by its owner when he and it returned to New Zealand for around 4 or 5 years it was then put into storage from the late 70s through to 1989 due to the owner's career taking him to Australia.
In 1989 the car was purchased by a Mr. George Morrell, a New Zealand solicitor and classic car enthusiast / restorer - at this stage the car had completed around 36,000 and was mechanically in excellent condition. The exterior of the car, however, had seen very little TLC and was deserving of (in Mr. Morrell's own words) a "sympathetic cosmetic restoration" to "reveal the 36,000 mile treasure lurking beneath the grime"!!!
The body was stripped back to bare metal, prepared and painted to the highest standard by two companies in Pukekohe, New Zealand - following Mr. Morrell's exacting instructions and standards. Further to this a new "double duck" hood was added and factory specification chrome wire wheels were added. The project was completed in 1990 with a mechanical service including a replacement of the timing chain.
In 1991 the car was featured on the cover of "New Zealand Classic Car" and was also entered into a Sotheby's auction, achieving a bid price of NZ$127,000 but the owner's expectations were a little higher than this very creditable figure.
The car was entrusted to Archibald and Shorter (Jaguar Dealers in New Zealand) and they sold the car in 1994 (18th February to be precise) to the owner of a large bodyshop business, Mr. Tony Gairdner - ironically for less than the Sotheby's bid price! At this time, the car's odometer was displaying 40,690 miles.
Due to the nature of his business, Mr. Gairdner's attraction to the car was (in his own words) "the wonderful condition it was in and the lovely straight bodywork" - surely the owner of a bodyshop business is the best person to judge this!
Mr. Gairdner kept hold of the car until 23rd April 2005, it was then showing a mileage of 42,500. He sold the vehicle to Mr. Victor Lendich who owed it for the next 9 years but covered only 559 miles in it during this time until he was sadly unable to drive anymore.
Mr. Lendich's son Philip then sold the vehicle to Steve & Robyn Godfrey of Tauranga New Zealand in March 2014 and during their ownership period of just over 18 months they spent just over NZ$11,000 on mechanical reconditioning and invoice are present in the history file.
We purchased the car in 2015 and shipped it back to the UK. On arrival we were very pleasantly surprised by its fantastic cosmetic condition, but decided to entrust it's mechanical preparation to the local and very well respected Jaguar Specialist, Winspeed Motorsport. They have been over the car in great detail as the over £5,000 worth of invoicing can attest to!!
This car is now presented in wonderful condition, both inside, outside and mechanically it is excellent. It is a pleasure to drive and the factory auto transmission works wonderfully with the burbling and torquey big V12.
So in summary, this is factory right hand drive automatic Series 3 V12 with a displayed odometer reading of just under 43,600 miles that would seem to be fully genuine and true based on the paperwork trail that we have which includes written statements from three of the long term owners in New Zealand and a multitude of invoices etc.
The car is rust free and a testament to the quality of the cosmetic restoration completed some 26 years ago, and also the subsequent fastidious owners!
Any inspection is encouraged, we have many photos available should they be required, please feel free to call.
